We, Robots
Juanjo Surace (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 1977)
2017- 2024, Barcelona.
Juanjo Surace through the collection “We, Robots”, revisits icons of art history from a contemporary and critical perspective, articulating a narrative that connects art, technology, and philosophy. Thus, based on the great masters, he constructs a sequence that develops from the creation of the robot by humans, the robot in the service of humans, the awakening of the machine's consciousness, the rebellion of the robot against humans, the victory of the robot, and up to the autopsy and study of the annihilated species.
It functions as a metaphor for freedom, identity, and the limits of human creation, such that each work invites the spectator to question the growing role of technology in our lives, while at the same time the series not only dialogues with the legacy of the past but also lucidly projects the ethical and philosophical dilemmas of our future, dominated by artificial intelligence. It is inscribed within the curatorial core Dialogues between tradition and contemporaneity, where classic painting is reactivated as a critical tool to think about the technological imaginaries of the present.
The perspective it brings to the collection:
We have incorporated Juanjo Surace's works into the collection because, through the We, Robots series, he revisits icons from the history of art with a critical, contemporary gaze. The value of the works combines impeccable technical mastery of oil painting and precise brushwork with a profound conceptual contribution. It proposes a reflection on freedom, identity and the limits of human creation. This balance between technique and idea reinforces each piece's ability to generate debate. It reactivates classical painting as a critical tool for thinking about technological imaginaries and the ethical dilemmas of the present.
