Costumbrismo postindustrial

Gr170 (Catalonia, 1980)

2026, Granollers

Mixed media: acrylic on canvas and glazed refractory ceramic pieces, 200 x 200 cm.

Costumbrismo postindustrial by GR170 combines a painting on canvas with unique ceramic pieces that share a common visual language. The work draws on the artist's experience of painting in the urban outskirts and presents a landscape inspired by the surroundings opposite their home, where the rural world and the industrial environment coexist. The combination of painting and sculpture constructs a playful imagery in which elements of nature and tools from painting practice enter into dialogue. Through a naïf-rooted aesthetic, with flat colours and defined lines, the work is part of the curatorial strand Play as a creative impulse, evoking the memory of artistic practice and of the territory with an open and poetic gaze.

The perspective it brings to the collection:

Grito's work plays a fundamental role in this collection, as it is part of the group of artists present in the urban space during the early moments of the consolidation of the urban art scene in Barcelona. His practice is particularly significant for understanding a generation that shaped a unique visual language, marked by influences from comics and illustration. Through a naïve-rooted aesthetic, the use of flat colors, and a defined contour line, the artist constructs an iconographic universe centered on the representation of characters and scenes linked to urban culture.
