The Catalan artist has become one of the most recognisable names in contemporary urban art thanks to his <strong>large-scale figurative compositions and his highly personal approach to painting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But who is Aryz really, and where can you see his works?<\/strong> His career began on the streets of Barcelona and, over the years, has evolved into an artistic practice that combines <strong>muralism, painting, drawing and printmaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/basmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4hkRWJlqrsyBnTrub6QKNAzBH8.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Aryz, the artist behind the large-scale murals?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Aryz <\/strong>is the artistic name of <strong>Octavi Serra Arrizabalaga<\/strong>, born in Palo Alto, California, in 1988 and educated at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. <strong>He began painting graffiti in the early 2000s around Barcelona <\/strong>and soon started to stand out for <strong>his large-scale interventions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his early years, Aryz found <strong>abandoned factories, industrial buildings and large walls<\/strong> to be the perfect spaces in which to experiment. His monumental characters, usually represented through <strong>desaturated colours and an aesthetic somewhere between the realistic and the fantastical<\/strong>, quickly gained international recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Aryz is often <strong>associated with graffiti<\/strong>, reducing his career to graffiti alone would be an oversimplification. The artist has taken his visual language far beyond urban culture, <strong>developing an important studio practice in which he experiments with painting, collage, lithography and printmaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2019, in fact, he <strong>has devoted an increasing part of his practice to studio work, reducing the number of murals he creates<\/strong> in order to explore his ideas and creative processes in greater depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/basmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/lANlLT4ZyF6z7DkJttP3RxdJO0.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aryz\u2019s style: from graffiti to contemporary art<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most recognisable characteristics of Aryz\u2019s street art is his <strong>representation of the human figure<\/strong>. His characters often appear in <strong>impossible positions, fragmented or layered on top of one another<\/strong>, as though different images had been frozen at the same moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Classical painting references coexist in his work with elements rooted in urban culture<\/strong>. This combination allows his pieces to work equally well on a huge fa\u00e7ade or inside an exhibition space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colour also plays a fundamental role<\/strong>. In contrast to the explosion of colour found in the work of some other urban artists, <strong>Aryz often uses pastel tones, greens, pinks, blues and desaturated colours<\/strong>. The result is an instantly recognisable aesthetic that seeks to <strong>integrate with its surroundings<\/strong> rather than compete with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His evolution demonstrates precisely how urban art can move from the street into the studio without losing its identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/basmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/aKUcyeP4nCRecRjd0abbO4q1Gw.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aryz and Barcelona: a relationship that began on the streets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barcelona has been fundamental to the career of <strong>Octavi Serra Arrizabalaga<\/strong>. It was in the city&#8217;s urban environment that he began experimenting with graffiti and developed a large part of his artistic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, Aryz\u2019s murals have travelled around the world. He has created interventions in countries including <strong>France, Japan, Denmark, China, Madagascar, Poland, the United States and Canada<\/strong>, establishing an international career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of his best-known interventions in Barcelona was <em>Crian\u00e7a<\/em><strong>, created in 2023 inside the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi.<\/strong> The work, which combined mural painting with studio work, <strong>depicted a mother and her child and established a dialogue between contemporary urban art and the religious space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The piece was temporary, so it can no longer be visited there<\/strong>. However, there are still other places where you can discover some of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where can you see Aryz\u2019s works?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best options for discovering his work in Barcelona is <a href=\"\/en\/\"><strong>BAS Museum<\/strong><\/a>\/<strong>, Barcelona Art Street Museum<\/strong>. The museum brings together a selection of national and international urban artists and <strong>features Aryz as part of its collection<\/strong>. His work is also included in one of the museum&#8217;s conceptual routes, dedicated to irony, criticism and subversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aryz at BAS Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visiting BAS is a particularly interesting opportunity to s<strong>ee a work by Aryz outside the context of an urban wall <\/strong>and appreciate his brushstrokes, layers and details up close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The piece, titled <em>El Coleccionista<\/em>, is part of a collection that also features works by international artists such as <a href=\"\/en\/blog\/felipe-pantone\/\"><strong>Felipe Pantone<\/strong><\/a>\/<strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"\/en\/blog\/okuda-san-miguel\/\"><strong>Okuda San Miguel<\/strong><\/a>\/<strong>, Vhils, <\/strong><a href=\"\/en\/blog\/escif\/\"><strong>Escif<\/strong><\/a>\/<strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"\/en\/blog\/pichiavo\/\"><strong>Pichiavo<\/strong><\/a>\/<strong>, Bordalo II, Sixe Paredes, Dulk, Mina Hamada<\/strong> and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeing Aryz in a museum environment offers a different perspective on his work.
